Hillsboro.

Ronald is an open minded man, and being a biology teacher, introduces his students to the theory of Evolution; but being blinded by an unwavering alliance with organized religion and all of it's teachings, th
e local people have him arrested.

"They're looking for something that's more perfect than what they already have. Why do you want to take that away from them when it's all they have?"(88)

Many of the locals, with aid of a famous politician, aim to make an example of Cates

But, Cates is not alone in his struggle...

A revolutionary, and sometimes infamous free thinker comes to the aid of Cates, and believes that they can take their case all the way to the supreme court.

"He wants to destroy everybody's belief in the Bible, and in God!"
